OAKVILLE, Ontario, July 18, 2017 /NASDAQ/ — Loraxian Inc. (Loraxian) has recently won tendering to act as Project Coordinator for a major lighting retrofit and upgrade for Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, one of the ten largest First Nation communities in Canada, located on the east side of Manitoulin Island.

As Project Coordinator, Loraxian is responsible for the orderly execution of every aspect of the project, which includes data gathering, financial modelling, project planning and management, vendor and labour sourcing, and financial sourcing.

The project, under the IGNITE Infrastructure Association Inc.’s (IGNITE) First Nations Sustainable Communities Program, will see all community assets, including amongst others, three schools, a nursery school, day care, health centre, arena, and band administration office.

All existing lighting fixtures will be replaced or retrofitted with high-end LED lighting fixtures and components, therefore drastically reducing the energy consumption in these facilities. The project includes 30 sites, 5,268 lighting fixtures, and a total of 11,294 lighting components. It is estimated the project will see savings in excess of $157,000 per year off their energy costs, or 58% savings in energy use for lighting. The $1.1 million project will be financed with contributions by the Save on Energy Program through IESO ($127,900) and term debt through private financing. Overall project payback is slightly more than 4 years.

“We are pleased to deliver such a positive community impact plan,” says Albert Ferrer, Chief Operations Officer and Co-Founder at Loraxian. “We see this as just the beginning of many new opportunities in both private and public sectors, to alleviate the burden of large-scale infrastructure project implementation, and ultimately address the financial constraints and problematic processes of the traditional infrastructure models.”

As a Resource Member of IGNITE, part of Loraxian’s mandate is to prioritize local economic development with an emphasis on providing the most benefit to the First Nations community, whenever possible, without compromising the efficacy, integrity, and execution of IGNITE’s Community Member Plan.

As part of a longer-term sustainable plan, Phase One is the lighting upgrade which will be followed by further investments in the infrastructure for energy efficiencies such as upgrading heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems as well as building envelopes (windows, doors, insulation). Future phases include power generation opportunities (solar microgrids, geothermal, pumped hydro, etc.) thereby reducing dependency on the Hydro One grid and the ever-increasing costs.
